The title of the world's largest cruise ship is currently held by the Icon of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean International. Launched in 2024, this Icon Class vessel measures around 250,800 gross tonnage and can accommodate up to 7,600 passengers. It is notable for its innovative design, featuring seven pools, a waterpark, and themed neighborhoods that cater to families, adventure seekers, and luxury travelers.
Before Icon of the Seas, the record belonged to the Wonder of the Seas, also operated by Royal Caribbean. Introduced in 2022 as part of the Oasis Class, it has a gross tonnage of approximately 236,857 and a maximum capacity of about 7,000 passengers. The ship is distinguished by its Central Park neighborhood, extensive entertainment options, and diverse dining venues.
The Symphony of the Seas, launched in 2018, was the largest cruise ship prior to Wonder of the Seas. Another Oasis Class vessel, it measures about 228,081 gross tonnage and carries up to 6,680 passengers. It is famous for attractions such as the Ultimate Abyss slide and Broadway-style shows, representing a milestone in cruise ship innovation at the time of its debut.
Together, these three ships showcase the evolution of modern cruise engineering, each surpassing its predecessor in scale and amenities. All are operated by Royal Caribbean International, underscoring the company's dominance in the construction of the world's largest passenger vessels.
